Ambient Lighting

It’s all about the styling, the self correcting spellings the evolutionary leap.
I could sit and ponder those words for too long.
You know I wouldn’t mind, i have fed the cats and they are still prowling around.
I have got a fresh corel photopaint pallet, I am going to attempt to record my progress. And I’m going to do the blinds as well.
Remembering that css is only nice if you are a hot designer.
Gone for width 779 height 400 pixels white background.
The photo paint print screen paradox. Difficult to imagine unless you are working in corel on a print screen graphic of corel.

Just having a bit of trouble uploading pic.
Apologies, I didn’t really fulfill my my commitment to teaching tutorial there. It is just my spontaneous nature, ha ha. Besides in reality it would take ages, a picture to describe the fountain fill, angle of rotation. A select font picture followed by perspective. It could become tedious. Instead I give you the finished graphic in all its splendor.

Search engine optimization

Working it out

A little background. My blog, like many is currently set by default to display 10 posts on the page, I like this configuration, as I considered from the perspective of a random viewer there would be enough interesting content accessible from a quick scroll to grab the attention. (a few pics, a bit of text)

Searchlight

What I didn’t realize until recently was how search engines work and pages are indexed. In fact I still don’t, but I have made a couple of interesting discoveries.

Where to begin, I guess to get it straight I’ll start with my first web site Central12.

If I type central12 into google search, I will get a link to a post I made when starting this blog concerning the fate of the central12 site.

http://www.oikofugic.com/blog/archives/2006/12/19/central12-moved/

I am obviously happy to find this link here, and consider my efforts to achieve this once so illusive goal worth while.

The search request central12 brings up the link to the specific post I made about central12 as it should.
However if I do a google search for the following,
‘It’s a plugin mashup’, which is the title of a recent post, the search engine brings a link to my blog, oikofugic.com/blog, rather than to

http://www.oikofugic.com/blog/archives/2007/08/12/its-a-plugin-mashup/

which would obviously be preferable.

This I believe is the case because the first post has dropped off the front page, therefore it’s existence in cyber space is independent of the site index and thus gets crawled individually?

So I don’t know if there is a way around this little problem, apart from setting the blog to display only one post on the front page.

I have not noticed this until recently, as have only now begun to explore the realms of analytics.
I initially thought the situation might have arisen out of my dabbling in the code, changing the permalink structure in conjunction with a trackback spam blocker – experimenting with various other plugins. I know not..
Any Ideas out there.

Queens of the Stone Age

Queens of the Stone Age

Tangled up in plaid

Scrobbled Queens of the.. this was first track. I am wondering what to follow.
It is strange, using the Last fm music interface, you type a band and you will 100% always get that band first track, but then some random track hits you in the teeth. Ahh, can sometimes be a rewarding experience.. luck of the digital learning about you draw.
Here goes..
Born of a broken man Rage against the machine. Skipped it Velvet revolver, not sure, will let it ride. She builds quick machines.. like it
Since then we have had the strokes REM some weird other stuff, helping me in my quest to find a viable plugin to exclude category.
Eagles of Death Metal Solid Gold. got to laugh, just sayin today how I’m not overly impressed, will see what this track has to offer. Recognize it. I hold up my hands. It’s a tune.

Update

Got this new plugin ‘Advanced Category Excluder’ to work from these guys Cheers.
Beth Orton Nice Came from the route of Kate Bush. Cat Power, mellow female artistsss. I’m loving this route Peter Gabriel Lazarus raised. up uP UP>>
Bugger, had my link to last post, so if I post a non picture post I will link to wrong place, as I have just noticed after Queens of the Stone Age post. What I need is ‘get last post from specific category plugin’ Show me the link. Show me..ee

Another Update

Solved the problem, found the plugin, Love it when a plan comes together, although I am surprised anything works at all with the amount of dodgy customizations on my part. Any how here it is if you need similar. Customizable Post Listings classic little bit of code. Hats off.
You just need to add a little code to where you want the desired effect. He has a number of built templates and examples. I tweaked around a little to get it working, cos I know not what I’m doing, ended up with this.

<?php c2c_get_recent_posts(1, "<li>%post_URL%</li>", '15'); ?>

The numbers in the above are:
1 = no. posts to be displayed. I just want the last one.
15 = no. of category. My Daily Photo is listed as 15, this can be found from dashboard-manage-Categories.
That’s it.

First Daily Photo

A Little bit cold

Bit Cold

Update

Not working out quite as planned, Used a plugin to hide category from front page, it worked perfectly, until a little later I noticed that the pagination had disappeared. When the category plugin was deactivated it reappeared and all was well. Disappointed as my technical understanding of the wordpress plugin structure/markup is limited. So now my first photo which should have been only accessible via a click sits on the top of this page.
Time to look for a solution. Will move this pic from to be soon hidden category of Daily Photo and post in latest news and attempt a re-start.

Thinking about starting a daily photo feature

By-Daily, Weekly at least

I have often been quite reserved about pics, and publishing them, but have seen sites that do, publish and write regally, and I for one enjoy the perspective of another’s interpretation of what they find interesting. So here goes. Don’t expect classics, just snaps, well meaning as they are they convey no technical expertise and only reflect what I momentarily thought to be of some cosmic importance. This is a moment from Liams birthday at Blackpool Zoo last week, will post some cutesy animal pics soon.

job..

Today’s remarkable tunes:

tunes12.JPG
An interesting selection generated by the ghost of ZAPPPA baby.

Just a quick one before I retire for the night.
I have a design job, not going to go into details at this point, other than to say it has been a most enjoyable experience so far.
My client.. Seems strange referring to ‘him/her’ as such. We have had a meeting, chat, discussed goals, styles. I assured the ‘client that I could achieve what was required..
And never one to divert from set task, jumped in I did with a frothy splash reminiscent of how you might feel jumping into a hot tub after a long walk through a dry and sandy desert. Initially webdesign… Initially a quest.
To get to the point I have a nice design in my head, lots of good content. The site is partially rendered, all involved are happy, apart from that is my schizoid me-O. Everything works as it should, but from within the darkest recesses I know with a hint of javascript a dab of php a stroll into the programming cosmos.. (it is a vast space.) Things could be supA seXy. So as a make-shift artist where do you decide what you currently know will do as opposed to what you know could be done if indeed you had the necessary and diligently acquired skill base.
My example:
I have pics to be displayed as feature pics on a page, from a category holder.
When displayed pics need to hover, showing a before and after scenario. These pics are to be displayed either horizontally or vertically, and as such I require only the two page templates to render the images.
If images did nor require ‘on hover’ I could use a spot of javascript to change the image to be displayed without having to call a fresh page.
IE:

<script language="javascript">
function ChangeImage1(){
document.getElementById("image1")
.src= "location of the first thumbnail";
}</script>

I imagine I ought to be able to use php to insert image code into standard template, maybe I will suss it over the next few days. Any ideas?

Update

I got over the above situation by making lots of pages, but it wasn’t so bad.
I have almost finished the job now, will post links to it soon.
During the building process I have implemented a number of techniques that were known to me, but hadn’t got around to using. Basically I have been using the php include function to pull the various repeatable aspects of the pages together. For example the top section [header] and [footer] at the bottom can be called from a file written once, and stored safely not to be tampered with, giving the site a delightful continuity that can sometimes be lost if pages are built individually.

lbphotgraphy.JPG

I received a few more images this evening to add to the site, and there is some tweaking to be done, behind the scenes tidy up. I am going to leave you with a pic from Lynseys’ portfolio, an example of the abstract and original content you will find in her site. Enjoy..

What is it?
