RSS

I have been thinking about bringing syndicated content here for a while,
not specifically here, you know, just to make it work for the purposes of exploration.
So here we have a rss syndicated desert desert page, (who said that), external from my blog, with my blog feed brought to display.
It is the work of dynamic drive
A useful resource.

Also content relevant to a build in example2 office of fair trading.
Who regulates the regulators, an old but fair question.
I think i will try to pull content from here, to my static home page, using the methods descibed in the dynamic tutorial.
To be fair I think the tutorial misses some elements in it’s description of the deployment of the script and its various parts.

Following intuition I got it working thus far, I am looking forward to the next phase.

Balance, to achieve..
A man hole cover is not a grid, Or is it?
…And the best way to make a point is?
The essentail debate, leading to a logical, beyond any kind of retort conclusion.

Rush Live pic

What can I say it was an awesome concert, although as the guy sat in front of me pointed out,

It’s just not the same without the clouds of cannabis smoke

My apologies regarding the poor quality of the pics. Mobile phone and distance. A non too conducive combination. Drop a line in the comments if you were there, or if you have better pics from the night I’d be happy to post them with credit.

A youtube vid from the night.

First Daily Photo

A Little bit cold

Bit Cold

Update

Not working out quite as planned, Used a plugin to hide category from front page, it worked perfectly, until a little later I noticed that the pagination had disappeared. When the category plugin was deactivated it reappeared and all was well. Disappointed as my technical understanding of the wordpress plugin structure/markup is limited. So now my first photo which should have been only accessible via a click sits on the top of this page.
Time to look for a solution. Will move this pic from to be soon hidden category of Daily Photo and post in latest news and attempt a re-start.

Thinking about starting a daily photo feature

By-Daily, Weekly at least

I have often been quite reserved about pics, and publishing them, but have seen sites that do, publish and write regally, and I for one enjoy the perspective of another’s interpretation of what they find interesting. So here goes. Don’t expect classics, just snaps, well meaning as they are they convey no technical expertise and only reflect what I momentarily thought to be of some cosmic importance. This is a moment from Liams birthday at Blackpool Zoo last week, will post some cutesy animal pics soon.

job..

Today’s remarkable tunes:
Titties and beer Frank Zappa
Slow blues Hendrix
Masks Van der Graaf Generator
and also\

tunes12.JPG
An interesting selection generated by the ghost of ZAPPPA baby.

Just a quick one before I retire for the night.
I have a design job, not going to go into details at this point, other than to say it has been a most enjoyable experience so far.
My client.. Seems strange referring to ‘him/her’ as such. We have had a meeting, chat, discussed goals, styles. I assured the ‘client that I could achieve what was required..
And never one to divert from set task, jumped in I did with a frothy splash reminiscent of how you might feel jumping into a hot tub after a long walk through a dry and sandy desert. Initially webdesign… Initially a quest.
To get to the point I have a nice design in my head, lots of good content. The site is partially rendered, all involved are happy, apart from that is my schizoid me-O. Everything works as it should, but from within the darkest recesses I know with a hint of javascript a dab of php a stroll into the programming cosmos.. (it is a vast space.) Things could be supA seXy. So as a make-shift artist where do you decide what you currently know will do as opposed to what you know could be done if indeed you had the necessary and diligently acquired skill base.
My example:
I have pics to be displayed as feature pics on a page, from a category holder.
When displayed pics need to hover, showing a before and after scenario. These pics are to be displayed either horizontally or vertically, and as such I require only the two page templates to render the images.
If images did nor require ‘on hover’ I could use a spot of javascript to change the image to be displayed without having to call a fresh page.
IE:

<script language="javascript">
function ChangeImage1(){
document.getElementById("image1")
.src= "location of the first thumbnail";
}</script>

I imagine I ought to be able to use php to insert image code into standard template, maybe I will suss it over the next few days. Any ideas?

Update

I got over the above situation by making lots of pages, but it wasn’t so bad.
I have almost finished the job now, will post links to it soon.
During the building process I have implemented a number of techniques that were known to me, but hadn’t got around to using. Basically I have been using the php include function to pull the various repeatable aspects of the pages together. For example the top section [header] and [footer] at the bottom can be called from a file written once, and stored safely not to be tampered with, giving the site a delightful continuity that can sometimes be lost if pages are built individually.

lbphotgraphy.JPG

I received a few more images this evening to add to the site, and there is some tweaking to be done, behind the scenes tidy up. I am going to leave you with a pic from Lynseys’ portfolio, an example of the abstract and original content you will find in her site. Enjoy..

What is it?

Css Layout

Layout techniques using css. Cascading style sheets.

Over the next few weeks I am going to build an external working page (I will link to soon) with pictures, graphic images, text, navigation and anything else that pops into mind at any given time along the course of the project. In an effort to keep this blog going I will post in smallish segments, to enable me to write more frequently.

Disclaimer:

I have uncovered all I know from the web, and my own investigations. All tutorials are given in the understanding that information acquired here might in some cases not be the best solution to any possible hypothetical situation. Hold me not responsible for any psychiatric episodes you may experience on your personal quest to build a web site.
Enjoy:

The beginnings

Above is a div. It can be any size as specified by the style sheet or style rules.

html: <div id="maincont"></div> css: #maincont { width:350px; height:200px; border:2px solid green; margin-left:30px; }

A div is just a box/container and is used to create a page layout. Divs can be placed within other divs, next to each other, or in any other combination you can imagine.

Below I am going to put another div inside the first and align it to the left.

html: <div id="maincont1"> <div id="lfttbx"></div> </div> css: #lfttbx { width:150px; height:50px; border:2px solid red; float:left; }

Floating a div like this is a common way to achieve a multi columned layout, or even more elaborate designs.
Below I will add another containind div to the structure, but align it to the right.

html: <div id="maincont1"> <div id="lfttbx"></div> <div id="rttbx"></div> </div> css: #rttbx { width:180px; height:70px; border:2px solid blue; float:right; }

Quit the weed I have!

Saturday 14thJuly ‘07

The rollies are no longer.

It has been for me a long time coming, I had my last smoke about 2am saturday night/sunday morning, It is now tuesday evening, and all is well.

More to follow, just establishing the link for the picture above.
I have altered my permalink structure in conjunction with a trackback spam blocker plugin, and consequently I can’t remember the configuration of the structure.

Day one

A sunday, a good day to start and strive for a change in direction. Also there was a plan for the day, which involved being busy and getting organized quite early.

Off to Clithero to visit nana and have lunch, and wander around garden centers. A talkin’ heads song comes to mind for all the wrong reasons. It was a good day bought a stone statue, gargoyle kind of thing for the garden, chats about life death and money…… Glad to be alive.

No comparison there with reality, or indeed my situation, for I am without doubt the most happy in fluctual space as one could be, considering the complexities of the plaster on the wall over the top of this monitor.

Not to mention the bloody whole thing, aka. THE Universe

No seriously it was a good day, I ate like a horse.

You know the ones you usually see when queuing for your bucket in KFC.

It was good grazing, you can’t beat that gravy, they say you put on weight when you quit the ciggies, I for one, no doubt in the minority here hope this to be true, for now at 38 I am just over 11 stone the same as the day I was born.

So, put on a few pounds hit the gym, buy a porshe Hahhah ah..

On the other hand Jod my partner who has also quit will find herself in the weight gaining situation I have just described without letting a morsel pass her lips, the unfair irony of organic metabolism.

Arrived home in the rain, (just snipped the rain reference for geological/meteorological reference.)

Kids to bed, a sudden and unexpected feeling of nausea, no doubt due to the over dosing effect of the nicotine patches.

nico.JPG

Felt pretty rough from about half nine till midnight when I went to bed. Day one done without a Smoke.. Good enough

Day two & three: (monday & tuesday)

Working from early till schools out time, then home. Feeling better today, no sickness, just trying not to think about the cigs. The patches are working well, no cravings, just habit compulsion to go for a smoke, before I remember that I have stopped. Last night was a little difficult, we bought some alcohol after the kids had gone to bed, an obvious trigger situation. We both managed, enjoyed the drink smoke free.

Day four: (wednesday)

I am off work today, at home with Molly. Day 4, never before got through this day when trying to quit, so today is of special significance.

Have you missed me

Missed who, can we miss what we have not found

A month since I last wrote, caused partly by lack of time, but mostly due to hardware issues. The good news is that we are up and running again, and at almost peak performance. Just installed a new hard drive with the assistance of Tom Chod

The old drive had become unstable, and I didn’t want to loose any files before a backup could be made. Apart from the frustration of searching for device drivers and reinstalling software programs I quite enjoyed the experience. Need to get a dvd writable drive and back up to disk I think whilst on the subject. There was few scary moments when the thought of loosing all my digital images at any moment was grim. Beyond that, tons of work, mostly experimental, learning, tips and tricks that I hope to one day when time allows get up here. I’d like to remind you before I go the Macdonalds blog is well worth a read. The global tour 2007-2008.
